What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is a highly specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on how the pelvic floor muscles contribute to your condition and symptoms. Very often the pelvic floor is overlooked in traditional therapy and can be the root cause of many of the above conditions.

We will begin your session with a health history and ask many questions to gather the right information. You will be provided with education about your condition and about the pelvic floor. You will then move onto a full body assessment where you may be asked to do some basic movements. Then your therapist will assess various areas of the body such as your hips, pelvis and low back.

You may require an internal pelvic floor assessment where you therapist will assess your pelvic floor vaginally or rectally. This allows your therapist to assess which muscles may be tight or weak, and helps to provide a full assessment. Of course this is only done with your consent.

You will then be provided with some home exercises to continue on your own in between sessions.

Your follow up sessions will be similar with some component of reassessment, treatment and exercise.
