How Soon Postpartum Should You Start Pelvic PT?

This is a question we often get in the clinic. How soon postpartum should we begin pelvic floor physical therapy. We always hear about the 6 week postpartum check up. And that after 6 weeks we are cleared for exercise. What that 6 week appointment checks for is to ensure that you are healing well, there are no signs of infection. It is just a simple checkpoint, yet we have really focused on this 6 week mark.

The truth is, that prior to 6 weeks you are having to hold a baby, walk up and down stairs, and do household activities. So starting some basic core activation, breathing techniques and simple mobility at 2-3 weeks postpartum can be beneficial. We are talking simple and gentle movements at this stage.

But having a check in with a pelvic floor PT at 2-3 weeks postpartum to have guidance on these simple movements, what to avoid in terms of movement and exercise, especially post c-section ensuring you are not straining too much. We do avoid any internal assessment until physician clearance at 6 weeks.
